Looking back on 2022, I can proudly say: I made quite a few mistakes. But I learned from them. And that's what I am really proud of.

Even though some of the mistakes were quite unnecessary (putting time and effort into yet another shiny new venture) the part to be proud of is recognizing the error, learning from it and moving forward without beating myself up over it.

Throughout the year I had to learn a few lessons that I want to share with you in this issue with the hope it will help you and your creator business in 2023.

Let’s dive in.

Action is everything

“How do I get started as a music creator?” is the question I hear most often. The answer is simple:

Take action!

You’re not going to get anywhere by:

  • waiting for the right moment to quit your day job

  • waiting for approval from your peers

  • waiting for inspiration to hit.

What music should you compose?

Anything that comes to your mind. It doesn’t matter if it’s good (that’s very subjective) or for a client or publisher.

Pushing yourself to create every day gives you an insight of what resonates with you and what resonates with your audience. The tracks that inspire both - these are the tracks you should be writing.

I struggled with it myself in 2022. Partly because we moved 3 times, we are in a country where we hardly speak the language, and our 3 kids were at home most of 2022.

I could see these all as excuses for not pushing out more content. And you’re right. Maybe they are.

But when I look back, I see that it was a struggle and I had too much on my plate.

This is why I change that in 2023.

  • One single action everyday.

  • One track per day for 365 days

  • Gaining insights through taking action.

Aaaaand Action!

Simple helps you to finish

I took on an assignment from a publisher at the end of 2021. An ambitious project that I proposed to them.

Throughout all of 2022 I kept trying to finish it. I couldn’t Some of the reasons I stated above.

With every time I sat down to work on that project my

  • Motivation

  • Perceived ability

  • Monetary outcome

were declining dramatically.

I suspect most creators that dive head first into a project that is to ambitious or simply not aligned with their goals, can cause these feelings to come up and ultimately can force them to quit music entirely.

That’s why I am a big proponent of starting your music career in a field that is simple to get into, easy to fulfill, and certain to make a substantial return from.

And to be completely blunt here - there is just no better solution to this than production music.

Think of it long term: You start out with building an asset (your tracks), have it promoted (publisher), and that way building a passive income stream (royalties).

These 3 building blocks are available to any music creator, veteran or emerging. And I saw it time and time again working for everyone in between.

Gain traction

I love that quote. It pretty much sums up everything that’s necessary to know about yourself and your business.

No music creator ever started with the perfectly polished, highly valuable track. We all start somewhere. And believe it or not, it doesn't matter where you are in your journey.

What matters is to choose the right application for your music to gain traction. Creating tracks is a learning process. And a skill that everyone can acquire with enough repetition and tenacity.

When we look at it this way, why isn’t everyone achieving success?

Why are most people giving up?

Because they do not gain traction. The frameworks I teach in the 2-Hour Composer are designed to gain that traction.

That includes having a creation template, research frameworks and outreach blueprints:

To gain traction yourself, I highly recommend building a daily routine in these areas. I’ll do the same.

And together we will reach our goals for this year. 😜
